KRI Launches 16 Days of Activism, marking 24 Years of UNSCR 1325 and Advancing Women, Peace, and Security

25 November 2024 – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), along with the High Council for Women and Development, in collaboration with UN Women, UNAMI, UNFPA, IOM, and key partners, launched the #16DaysOfActivism campaign in Erbil. The event marked the 24th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, reaffirming the region’s commitment to advancing women’s rights and highlighting women’s vital role in conflict prevention, resolution, and peacebuilding.
During the event, HE Mr. Reber Ahmed, KRG Minister of Interior, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering peace, stability, and the well-being of women in the Kurdistan Region. Dr. Khanzad Ahmed, Secretary General of the High Council for Women and Development, emphasized the importance of sustained international support for implementing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda while showcasing achievements under the KRI Action Plan on WPS (2021–2024).
The event also highlighted progress in women’s participation, legislative reforms, and protection mechanisms under the current KRI Action Plan, while serving as a platform to discuss the upcoming 2025–2029 Regional Action Plan. Speakers stressed the need for continued collaboration between government, UN agencies, and civil society to sustain progress, address challenges like violence against women and underrepresentation in key decision-making processes and achieve the goals of UNSCR 1325.
