Advancing Women, Peace, and Security Amid Regional Challenges: Reflecting on Achievements and Shaping Future Strategies in Iraq

Baghdad, 22 October 2024 – In commemoration of the 24th anniversary of UNSCR 1325, a high-level event was held in Baghdad to emphasize the pivotal role of women in peace and security amidst regional challenges. Organized by the National Directorate for Iraqi Women (NDIW) with the support of UNAMI, IOM and UN Women, the event addressed the evolving role of women in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, both within Iraq and in the broader region.
Keynote speakers, including Dr. Yusra Karim Mohsen, Director General of the NDIW; Mr. Ghulam Isaczai, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Resident Coordinator, and Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq (DSRSG/RC/HC); and Mr. Ajay Madiwale, Representative for UN Women Iraq, highlighted Iraq’s commitment to advancing the WPS agenda. Dr. Yusra emphasized the government's efforts to boost women’s leadership and strengthen protection mechanisms. Mr. Isaczai underscored the importance of incorporating women’s voices in peace and security efforts, stressing their essential role in building a stable and inclusive society. Mr. Madiwale recognized Iraq's leadership in implementing UNSCR 1325, noting that embedding WPS principles into national policies has been transformative for achieving sustainable peace and development. Other notable speakers included H.E. Ali al-Habhab, Lebanese Ambassador to Iraq; Ms. Donya Al-Shammari, Head of the Women Committee in Parliament; Dr. Khanzad Ahmed, Secretary General of the High Council for Women and Development in the Kurdistan Region; and a delegation from Palestine. They focused on regional tensions and their impact on the WPS agenda, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts to enhance women’s roles in peace and security across the region.
The event gathered representatives from government institutions, international organizations, and civil society to discuss enhancing women’s leadership and security in Iraq’s stability and development agenda. The NDIW presented significant achievements within the WPS framework, highlighting increased female participation in decision-making and improved protection measures. Panel discussions featured experts who shared strategies for empowering women’s leadership and grassroots involvement, aiming to develop actionable recommendations for Iraq’s upcoming third National Action Plan and shape broader regional dialogues on women’s roles in peacebuilding.
