UN Women, JCC and HCWD Strengthen Collaboration to Support Women’s Role in Crises Response and Humanitarian Assistance

Erbil, 21 August 2024- On Wednesday, UN Women Representative, Mr. Ajay Madiwale visited Ms. Srwa Rasul, General Director of the Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC), along with Dr. Khanzad Ahmad, the Secretary General of the Iraqi High Council for Women and Development (HCWD) and Ms. Parwin Khan, an advisor at the HCWD.

The meeting, held at the JCC headquarters, commenced with a warm welcome from Ms. Rasul who provided an in-depth overview of the center’s critical roles and activities. Ms. Rasul highlighted the ongoing humanitarian situation in the Kurdistan Region (KR), emphasizing the challenges faced by women in humanitarian settings and during crises and disasters. She underscored the efforts of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Interior in advancing women’s roles at regional, provincial, and local levels in responding to these crises.

A significant focus of the discussion was on the process of national return of displaced persons, with Ms. Rasul noting that returning women, in particular, require additional support and assistance. She reaffirmed the JCC’s commitment to providing comprehensive support, cooperation, and assistance for the projects implemented by UN Women in the region. On his part, Mr. Madiwale expressed his gratitude for the facilitation and support provided by the JCC to UN Women and other UN agencies. He highlighted the crucial role of the JCC in the region and discussed ongoing and future activities, including strengthening collaboration with the HCWD. Mr. Madiwale emphasized the importance of Women, Peace and Security programmes within the regional National Action Plan and discussed the ongoing preparations for the third phase of regional affairs. He reiterated UN Women’s readiness to continue close cooperation with both the JCC and the HCWD.

This meeting marks a significant step forward in reinforcing the partnership between UN Women and the KRG, with a shared commitment to advancing women’s roles in crisis response and supporting women in humanitarian contexts across the KR.
