Joint advocacy initiatives

UN Women Iraq Country Office continuously works with numerous partners, NGOs and grassroots organisations on advocacy campaigns and initiatives to promote gender equality. These initiatives include the International Women’s Day marked every year on March 8 and the 16 Days of Activism which start on November 25, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and December 10, which is Human Rights Day.

International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day (IWD) is marked every year on March 8. It is dedicated for celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women as well as for emphasizing the need to call for gender equality and the empowerment of women. It is marked by all UN agencies and people around the world with various types of activities that affirm the importance of gender equality. It is a day about unity, reflection advocacy and joint action.

16 Days Campaign on Violence Against Women

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence uses the 16 days between International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November) and International Human Rights Day (10 December) to reinforce that eliminating all forms of violence against women is a human rights issue and that the act of perpetrating violence against women is a human rights violation.
