High Committee Reinforces Support for Women Candidates in 2024 Kurdistan Elections

Erbil, 22 October 2024 – The High Committee for the Protection of Women Candidates convened on 17 October to bolster support for women candidates in the 2024 Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections, held on 20 October. This key meeting gathered committee members from various ministries and entities, along with representatives from UN Women and UNAMI.
During the meeting, Dr. Khanzad Ahmed, Secretary General of the High Council for Women and Development, emphasized the importance of protective measures already in place, such as risk assessments, awareness campaigns, and coordinated efforts with multiple agencies. These initiatives, she noted, were critical to fostering a safe election environment and encouraging women’s political participation. Committee members also provided updates, sharing that the committee’s hotline received and resolved 10 complaints through its dedicated operation room.
UN Women’s Representative in Iraq, Ajay Madiwale, highlighted the progress achieved through close collaboration with the Kurdistan Regional Government, Independent High Electoral Commission, and other partners. Madiwale emphasized the committee's commitment to aligning with international standards like CEDAW to create an inclusive political environment for women in the Kurdistan Region. He expressed gratitude to committee members and highlighted the importance of sustainable structures, supported by the government, international community, and CSOs, to bolster women’s political participation.
