Strengthening Peace and Stability: The Role of Iraq’s Women Peace Mediators Network

February 17, 2025 - The National Directorate for Iraqi Women (NDIW) and UN Women convened a meeting with members of the Iraq National Women’s Peace Mediators Network. The meeting focused on outlining the tasks, roles, and responsibilities of the network, with an emphasis on the mediators' crucial role in enhancing sustainable peace and promoting women's political participation, in line with the National Action Plan for Women, Peace, and Security.

Dr. Yousra Kareem, General Director of the NDIW, stated in her speech, “This program is not merely a local initiative; it is the first national network of its kind at the Arab and regional levels, aiming to enhance the role of women in peacebuilding and support women in the governorates to achieve stability and sustainable development.” Additionally, Deputy Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers Dr. Othman Al-Jaheshi highlighted the importance of reconciliation and peacebuilding and emphasized the mediators' role in positively influencing their communities and resolving disputes. He also acknowledged the significant role of tribal leaders in resolving conflicts, noting the support of the Prime Minister for this initiative and the coordination with governors, provincial councils, and relevant women’s departments.

This initiative is rooted in principles that align with the Iraqi Constitution, local laws, social diversity, and a commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals. It aims to empower women within their communities, positioning them as catalysts for positive change. While the focus includes conflict resolution, the initiative also seeks to foster understanding and facilitate peaceful solutions. It underscores the importance of collaboration between local communities, government institutions, and organizations to ensure effective and sustainable outcomes.
